On March 24, 2026 University of Technology and Arts of Byumba (UTAB) and Delight Rwanda signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the UMUGWEGWE Eco-Friendly Initiative Project.

This partnership brings together academia and community-driven development to unlock the potential of the UMUGWEGWE plant (Agave sisalana), a culturally significant and environmentally friendly resource used in traditional crafts. The initiative is designed to blend indigenous knowledge with modern sustainable production techniques, ensuring both preservation and innovation.
At its core, the project aims to create meaningful impact through skills development, research, and economic empowerment. Students, artisans, and local communities especially women and youth will benefit from hands-on training, internships, and access to improved production methods. By strengthening capacity and encouraging innovation, the partnership seeks to enhance product quality and competitiveness in both local and international markets.

The collaboration also emphasizes environmental conservation by promoting renewable materials and discouraging practices that threaten the sustainability of the UMUGWEGWE plant. At the same time, it ensures that Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage is preserved through documentation and promotion of traditional craftsmanship.
Through joint research, shared facilities, and coordinated marketing efforts, UTAB and Delight Rwanda will establish eco-friendly production systems, develop strong market linkages, and create sustainable livelihoods. A Joint Project Management Committee will oversee implementation, ensuring accountability, impact measurement, and continuous learning.
